The Horticulture Department Visakhapatnam Organized an exposure cum training programme who got acquainted with research and extension activities. Other than this in different occasions about 70 farmers, extension Workers, officials visited to VNR farms and Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya Raipur, Chhattisgarh State. For the Exposure Trip, the Horticulture officers selected 70 progressive farmers from Visakhapatnam district. The Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya accommodated to the participants. The exposure visit was held in Raipur on 27th & 28th August, 2016. This Training cum exposure visit was conducted with an objective to generate awareness on Vegetable cultivation and to expose farmers about best practices of the intervention comprised of construction of permanent pandals and trellises for protected cultivation of horticulture crops through a cluster approach, duly considering local agro-climatic conditions/needs/crops/priorities, and providing market linkages for ensuring remunerative prices to the farmers. 3 Intervention The major vegetables grown in the Sabbavaram area tomato, onion, ridge guard, cluster beans, brinjal, green chilli and other creepers. More than 70 farmers from different Mandals of Visakhapatnam District attended this two-days event.
The Horticulture Department and JAGRUTHI Organisation Selected 11 Progressive farmers from 20 Farmer Clubs in Sabbavaram Mandal 5 villages. The Horticulture officers Smt. Syamala, Smt Radhika and Sri Ganesh also along with team and visited the Hi-tech vegetable nurseries to see production of grafted vegetable seedlings in VNR farms and interacted regarding multiplication of guava grafts and high density planting in Taiwan guava.
The gardens have also become excellent sites for the in situ conservation of indigenous vegetable varieties and therefore help conserve vegetable biodiversity. The farmers visited plasticulture system in VNR fields. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, watermelons, and okra are vegetable crops that have shown significant increases in earliness, yield, and fruit quality when grown on plastic mulch. Some less valuable crops such as sweet corn, snap beans, southern peas, and pumpkins cultivated in VNR farms. The farmers learned about vegetable growers are looking for new ways to achieve higher-quality produce, superior yields, and early spring markets. The plasticulture system–which combines raised beds, plastic mulch, drip irrigation, and fumigation–has helped an increasing number of producers reach these goals. Growers using the plasticulture system have doubled and tripled yields and harvested their crops two to three weeks earlier than is possible with traditional growing practices.
On 28th August 9 am The Horticulture officers conduct interact session with farmers about on exposure visit. Progressive farmer Vennala Appla Naidu shared his experience with the group. He told previously got only Rs.60,000/- from the traditional cultivation and he is happy with higher income got through cultivation of Tomato with trellis and best cultivation practices adopted. Smt Radhika H.O Explained to trainers, farmers should construct and maintain the permanent or semi permanent pendals for minimum period of 3 years. On an Average, the farmer will cultivate 3 crops every year on the same pendals. Even though, the erection charges are more at initial stages, the same can be recovered for 3 years period.
At the end of the day the Exposure Visit is Very useful to formers. It will be helpful to formation of Vegetable producers Farmers Producer Organisation in Sabbavaram Mandal and Promotion of Pendals and trellies for reducing the cost of cultivation of vegetables.
